Offputting FM

Welcome to Offputting FM!

Every day I do the public service of sharing a song I enjoy and maybe enlightening you with my thoughts and feelings, because what’s the point of having taste if I can’t force my friends and strangers on the internet to listen to the music I love?

for the best viewer experience put your headphones on and listen while you read :)

Pushing it Down and Praying – Lizzy McAlpine

I recently learned this song is a voice note on Lizzy’s phone, with everything else added in post which speaks to her insane talent. It’s one of the rawest songs I’ve heard in a long time. It encapsulates the feeling of being haunted while in a new relationship, maybe even a better relationship, and realizing that perhaps an ex partner understood you much more deeply, even if your new partner is better for you in many ways.

It’s a secret you carry around, hoping no one can see the dark thought: I still want pieces of my old life and love, even though someone else loves me now. He is stable. You are deep, still reminiscing on a past love.

Fame Is A Gun — Addison Rae

This is my song of the year. I love Addison so much. In fact, while hanging out with one of my best friends today she asked me, If you had to pick one song that is you, what would it be?
This is my answer.

There’s a unique quality to this song that gets me like nothing else does. It hits a spot in my chest that resonates so deeply it almost hurts.
“It never was enough, I always wanted more.”

I’ve been acting since I was a child, singing too, and you get propped up for these talents for so long — until suddenly you’re “too old” for all that and people start telling you to get a real job. But what if all I’ve ever wanted is to be famous? What if that hunger, that spark, is the most honest thing about me?

What’s so wrong with wanting more?

So that’s it. I think I’ll try and be famous.
I know I can do it. It’s only cringe until you make it, right folks? Pictured my view from her show in Austin. Song linked below :)

Poster Boy — 2hollis

I’ve recently fallen in love with 2hollis. All of his songs make me feel like I’m in a very well made, sexy edit while also playing Minecraft circa 2014.  Very cool, very Tumblr.
2hollis is COOL.
Like, just naturally, infuriatingly cool.
I’d love to do a full set of his songs. His vocals are distant and intimate at the same time, like someone whispering from across the room. It's an internet romance. Pictured, me DJing in Austin not playing a 2hollis song haha. Song linked below :)

Some Protector — ROLE MODEL

This song is gutting in a very touching way. It’s a wonderful description of unconditional love: I will love and protect you no matter what. I will lie to my own mother and say that one day I’ll move on and find someone else, but I know I never will, not completely. I’m forever changed by this love and connection, and I want to have a tie to you forever, even if that means it’s me caring from afar.

It’s the kind of love where you pretend you’ve moved on, but every song on shuffle is about them. You can date other people, you can dye your hair, you can move to another city but that person, that love, lives in your heart so intimately.

Because some people never leave. They just change shape within your life.

Good Time - The Dare

This song is simply fun and sexy. It feels like three Red Bull vodkas, karaoke, and making out in the back of a dirty club where everyone is dancing and there are no phones.

I love The Dare. I saw him at ACL this year, and I first heard his famous song “Girls” about four years ago. I thought he was fabulous although I definitely assumed he was British. I think it’s the haircut/suit combo.

I adored his work on the song “Guess” from Brat, and every day I wish I lived in NYC so I could stumble into one of his sets on a night out with my girls and have the exact situation described above.

Pictured me having a "Good Time" hahah

Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy) — The 1975

This song, in my mind, almost feels like an answer to Party 4 U by Charli XCX. Not in a literal sense Party 4 Udefinitely isn’t about Matty Healy  but the messaging of these songs feels like a back-and-forth.
The lyrics are quintessential The 1975: “I think I’ve fucked it royally.” It doesn’t sound like it’s trying too hard; Matty is just being honest. It feels like he’s walking home after saying some dumb bullshit to a girl he loves, which I’m sure most men can relate to. And instead of fixing the issues, he just reminisces about what could have been.

Also, it’s sonically stunning George Daniel takes the lead on production and he ate down mama.
The 1975 is truly my favorite band in the world and I can’t wait to see them live again.
Pictured me in Munich, seeing them on the Still At Their Very Best tour.

Canary Wharf Drift — Bassvictim

This song sounds like taking a wrong turn in London and stumbling into an it girl function, underneath a bridge. (Idk Ive never been to London, but I have an imagination)  It’s dark, glossy, and incredibly unserious. The bass hits, and suddenly it’s the only thing you can think about. It makes me want to wear sunglasses indoors (more than I already do, haha) This is the perfect soundtrack for the romantically self deluded, late night party girls. You know, my kind of people. It’s the auditory equivalent of hitting the double peace sign rawr XD pose. I love adding this song to my DJ sets, Pictured teheheh

Something Stupid - Frank and Nancy Sinatra

I recently heard this song again while watching the hit British sitcom peep show, and it reminded me how much I adore it. I love Frank and Nancy Sinatra both in their own right, but something about them coming together for this sweet little earworm just makes my whole day.

It makes me want to be in the kitchen, half a bottle of red wine deep, making spaghetti with someone I love and dancing to “Somethin’ Stupid.” It really pulls at the heartstrings. Here is an unrelated picture of me in the kitchen holding my birthday cake.

grandfather please stand on the shoulders of my father while he's deep sea fishing - Lana Del Rey

If I am one thing on this earth, it’s a Lana Del Rey fan. Genuinely. I have a tattoo because of her, and her whole discography lives in my soul. This song in particular just feels… huge. Not “Summertime Sadness” radiohuge, but the kind of huge that feels like a love letter to herself and to her long time fans.

“I have good intentions even if I’m one of the last ones,” and “I know they think that it took somebody else to make me beautiful… but they’re wrong.”

Those lines feel like such an I did it moment. She’s spent years building this era defining world, aesthetic, and sound. pushing through every weird take, every criticism, every misunderstanding which are too many to list here.

Now she’s finally getting the credit she deserved the whole time.

I love this woman with my whole heart.

I have a lovely core memory tied to this song: driving down the Maine coast with my dad on the way to his home in New Hampshire, just looping it over and over. I literally couldn’t stop. Pictured me in Maine listening to this song 100000000 times.

 iPod Touch - Ninajirachi

I was introduced to Ninas music last summer when I friend of mine booked her to preform in Austin, I fell in love with her album "I love my computer" immediately. She really is doing it like nobody else right now . writing, producing, and publishing some of the freshest music in the scene. Getting to see her live in Austin was such a treat and she deserves all the recognition she's receiving currently. Pictured me and bestie at her show :) The song iPod touch went triple platinum in my ears. Nothing gets me feeling hotter and cool to the max.
